CYCLISTS have won priority over motorists on busy Beach Rd with a trial banning parking on weekends likely to start next month. Kingston Council approved the 12-month trial, which will see parking banned between 6am and 10am on Saturdays and Sundays, and on Monday night. Cr Lewis Dundas told the meeting most Beach Rd houses had garages and driveways, and there was also ample parking in side streets. “It is not a huge encumbrance,” Cr Dundas said. “If it does not create hardship for the residents, why not give it a go?” The no-parking zones will apply on the inland side of Beach Rd between Mundy St, Mentone, and Nepean Highway, Mordialloc, and on the coast side between Rennison St and the highway

As an avid cyclist I must say I am disgusted by the way road cyclists behave in this country - as if they own the road and are invulnerable. Then if they get hit it's never their fault. That's roadies for you. I cycle 90% offroad and if I do go on the road I am scared as heck of cars. That comes from cycling in South Africa where dozens of cyclists are run over intentionally every year. So I agree anything to keep them out of the way of cars is probably a good thing.
Unless something has changed, when I was a kid I was told it was against the law to do things like ride more than 2 abreast in the company of cars, no riding through red lights etc. Perhaps the whole bike road rules need to be reviewed and relaunched, not only to avoid frustrating drivers causing driver bad behaviour but also giving bikes more respect when they are doing nothing wrong!
The only reason we can identify a bad driver is because the rules that govern drivers are black & white. I see riders going through red lights, stop signs without stopping, turning without hand signalling, riding on foot paths, riding 2 + abreast, the list goes on. The problem I see is people resent bike riders breaking the law (like they do with other drivers) & when they pull up next to you to give you an earful because you honked them when they cut you off because they didn’t signal they were turning, its hard to swallow how hard done by they are.
As someone who has recently returned to riding a lot more often than I have for decades, I can see both sides.
As recently as this morning I was annoyed at a cyclist who cut me off (I was driving my kids to school) and then turned in front of an oncoming bus, forcing the bus to brake. Also this morning I witnessed a cycling woman, who had her kid in one of those little trailer things, charge through a railway crossing while the lights were flashing and the boomgates were lowering while I sat lawfully waiting.
These are the types of things that peeve me about some cyclists. Seriously, it is rare to see a cyclist wait at a red light, especially if there's a gap in the traffic!
Maybe because I am not a long-term rider I find myself having extreme respect for motorised traffic when I am riding on the road. And even more so if I have my kids with me riding as well. When I ride I do not feel the arrogance that some cyclists must, as evidenced by their behaviour.
It's the old argument: if cyclists want equality on the roads then they should obey the road rules and show the same courtesy to other road users as they would if they were driving a car.
My 2c.
