I vote Quintrex!!

Personal preference.

Had one many many years ago, and you can't beat that flared bow in my opinion.

Don't have one any more : (

If only I could afford one...... *sigh*

I have a Quintrex 4.5m Escape with a 40hp Yamaha. It's 12 years old now and the Motor is as good as new. It has done a fantastic job for our family fishing inland systems, the bays and even offshore. Great for fishing and also does a good job towing the kneeboard.

We have had it in some tough conditions with 1.5m choppy swell and it holds up well, cuts through 1/2m chop easy.

All in all they are a fantastic fishing boat, and are very tough!

Hope that helps!

Yeah andy is right they are much of a muchness but I have heard the millenium hull quintrex are OK - personally I would go fibreglass but I mainly fish the bays. As for motors, I have a 2 stroke Mercury and it has been nothing short of excellent but it is noisy. If you can afford it I would recommend the 4 stroke Suzuki - the best motors going at the moment IMO.

Good luck and let us know what you decide on.

Agree with Martyn that both Quintrex and Stacer are much of a muchness nowadays and both are made by the same company Telwater.

Personally I like the fibreglass boats too and a smaller Streaker 4.58m to the 5.02m cuddy would be ideal for both and not too heavy.

If a tinny is your thing however, the older Quintrex and Stacer boats show better build quality and better quality aluminium used. Newer ones need to be inspected carefully for weld cracking, corrosion etc.

I actually prefer the Stessl and Stessco alloy boats.

With regards motors I have a Mercury 2 stroke and yes they are noisy but very reliable and have very good corrosion resistance, for saltwater use. The Suzuki 4 stroke would also be my pick of the 4 stroke motors.

Goodluck

Age186,
How much do you want to spend :?:

Do you have a hull configuration in mind :?:

As most of your fishing is in rivers, aluminium is perfect.

I looked at both Quintrex & Stacer before buying a Webster which I'm now very glad I did. Well worth a look :D

Age186,

I owned boats previously many years ago and had to sell them due to work and starting a family sort of commitments, 18 months ago I decided to get back into the boating lifestyle.

I bought a secondhand 2001, Millenium hulled 5 metre Quintrex seabreeze runabout with a 90hp 2 stroke Yammie on the back, all I can say is that I am extremely happy with it. I looked for 7 months at various boats, sizes, composition etc before deciding on it. I was initially going to buy a boat in an even share partnership with my brother, however this did not eventuate.

I made the choice of my boat at the time due to being great value for money as I had a budget to stick to and it suited my needs for family fun and for my fishing needs and I purchased it by myself no half shares.

It rides and handles well with no spray over the sides from the hull. Somedays it gets noisy and the banging annoys you but It is still a great hull. I am extremely happy with the boat and would recommend them to anyone.

Bantam made mentioned of Webster boats they are also a great alloy boat and i would have purchased one of them if I was in the even share partnership with my brother.

Bass_straitener made mention of the Streaker boats they are a great fibreglass hull also and are value for money, I have had friends who have owned them and are extremely happy with them. :) :)

I own a quintrex boat myself, however, there was a post on this site where there were pin holes, in a Quintrex hull that was about 3 years old. Just our of warranty.

There was a discussion on another website about the recent quality control at the manufacturers.

It is possible that two people can buy exactly the small boat, and one will have no problems and the other owner will have heaps of problems.

There is a book on buying secondhand boats, and there was a batch of boats where in aluminium, the aluminium was of poor quality and prone to corrosion.

Stacer, I think are manufactured by Quintrex.

Howdy 'wools'.
I have a 2002 Quinnie 5 mtr Seabreeze with 70hp Yam 2 stroke & couldn't be happier. With the millenium hull & flared bow it rides great for an ali boat but remember, it's a runabout that does great service as a bay & light offshore boat - it's not a dedicated offshore big water boat.
'Glass' boats tend to ride better but usually require bigger motors which means less economy. I find the 70hp plenty powerful for the 5 mtr & get great economy. 'Glass' is also a bit more fregile & easilly damaged, although these days that's really not a consideration. Just watch a 'glass' boat if you're thinking of buying 2nd hand - get it checked out professionally. A rotting transom can mena a repair bill greater than the boat is worth.
In the past, out of curiosity, Ive looked at the replacement to the Seabreeze, which is the 'Coastrunner' & was very disapointed in the quaity of the ali welding - rubbish to say the least. To be honest, in my opinion it's s_ _ t. Ya couldn't give me a 'Coastrunner', but I do love my Seabreeze. Can't coment on the stacer.

Bill.
