Looking for berley recipes...

Craig Gibbs writes:
Could someone please give me a good reliable recipe for berley, and also if different "recipes" are required for berley if certain fish types are being targeted. E.g., A plus a little B for mullet berley, B plus some C and D for salmon, etc. I fish in both the rivers and ocean so any advice would certaintly be appreciated.

Hi Craig, a good place to start would be our bait/berley tips page. Regards, Matt.

Will replies:
Hi Craig, my berley is made up of old bait, tuna oil and bread or flour. I mix it in an old drum much to my wife's disgust as the smell can be a bit rank but it works. I also mix in water from the area I fish and just put a bit in at a time, but check out the page for berley... good luck, Will.

Dazza replies:
Craig, I tend to use the same concoction for berley every week. That is, chook pellets, mixed with water, to make them slightly soggy and easy to mash up. Then, any old bait that you didn't use from your last trip (always keep unused bait and berley for this very reason) can be chopped or mashed up and thrown in, along with fish frames or carcasses, finally add a good serving of tuna oil and mix it all up. I fish mostly out of a boat, so I freeze it up and then when I get out there on my spot, I put the frozen berley block in a mesh bag, and hang it over the back, where it slowly dissolves, and breaks up, leaving a slow, but constant berley trail out the back of the boat. Of course this can be used effectively in some land-based fishing situations also. Good luck, and happy berley manufacturing!! I know the last thing I usually feel like doing after washing the boat, rods, reels, gear, etc., is mashing up bait and making up berley for the next trip, but it definitely is worth it, and is certainly economical.
