Red worms found in trout at Bullen Merri
Brian Mcconnell writes:
On the weekend I fished Lake Bullen Merri, caught a good 4lb brown trout, when I filleted it I found about 6 little red worms in its flesh, they were hard to find. What can you tell me about them? Regards, BMACK.

Karl Fedke replies:
Brian, the little red worms you refer to are commonly called Stragaliteies (I think that's how you spell it), they're a parasitic worm that are not harmful to humans. But for what it's worth you can scrape them out and eat the fillet but cook it well. The stragaliteies worm is distributed by wading birds who eat small infested minnows then carry the eggs via their droppings to other waters, where other minnows eat the eggs or lava of the worm. As you can imagine trout and other bigger fish then eat the infected minnows which inturn infest the fish. The worm is fairly common in waters like Modewarre. They are only just starting to show up in fish from Bullen Merri and the reason for this is due to the fish not being that old in the lake. So don't worry too much as nearly all the fish I've caught at the Bull have been void of the worm. if you run your hand along each flank of the fish you catch you can feel them. So if you don't like what you feel throw the fish back and start again. All the best, Karl.
