What is drag all about and how do I adjust it?

Lee Smith writes:
I'm a novice about to try surf fishing for the first time. All the surf fishing articles I read talk about adjusting the drag on your reel when bringing in a fish. What is drag all about and how do I adjust it on my reel? I note a black switch at the rear of my reel which locks the line when on fully and suspect this must be the drag. How does it work? Thanks!

Alan McFayden replies:
The drag, Lee, is how much pressure is on the line before it comes off the reel. There is an adjustment either to the front or the rear of the reel depending on the make. It is advisable that the drag be set to three quarters of the breaking strain of the line. Different fishermen will have different ideas but if it is set to three quarters you will not risk breaking the line and at the same time should tire out the targeted fish so it will be easier to land. A good idea is to rinse the reel in fresh water after use, just hose it down to get rid of the salt because if you don't your gear will soon rust out. Hope this helps.
