How long can fish safely be kept frozen?

Dazza writes:
I have had gummy shark, snapper and large flathead frozen since February/March. They are all well and truly wrapped in taped plastic bags. I was wondering if they are still safe to eat? Especially the snapper. I only caught 3 of the buggers last season, and it would kill me to have to turn them into berley.

David Grimshaw replies:
Bound to get many answers on this subject. For me, I've eaten elephant fish 3 months after catching. Trevally less time and basically I eat my fish often enough so they're not in the freezer for long. If any air has got to them it will be evident by white patches on the fish. If there are any then turf them. I hate to think of turning otherwise good fish into berley, however it says something for only keeping what you need. Cheers.

Peter Jolly replies:
You should still be OK with those fish as long as there has been no freezer burn. I wrap mine in plastic, a few sheets of newspaper and more plastic, works OK. You will soon know if they are any good as when thawed the flesh will be soft if they have gone bad. In some circles it is believed that gummy is best after it has been frozen and then thawed to cook, I'm one of those that do it this way. If the fish has been looked after from boat to freezer you should be OK.

Davey Crockett replies:
I have deer meat with white spots and still eat it, I'm still alive... hang on (pinch) yep... I think it is six months for fish and about twelve months for meat. Well, I love my venison and fish.
