What are "squirters" and where can I get them?

David writes:
I was fishing for bream in the Yarra and another person was using what he called "squirters" as bait. The "squirters" were like large pear grapes that when pressed squirted water. They were capable of being cast a good distance due to the water content and on hitting the water having been cast immediately become "weightless". The "squirters" were very effective. I was told that he digs them up at the Werribee River however I have never seen them. I have no idea how to locate them. Can you help? Regards, David.

Henry replies:
Hello David, squirters or softshell clams can be found in the mud flats at low tide along the Werribee River and other estuaries by walking along the bank near the water's edge. If you watch where you are walking you will see water squirt up from the mud, dig carefully and you will find them. Put them in a bucket and cover them with water, they will keep for a few days. Probably the best big bream bait of all at Werribee.
