Hi! I just bought a rod but the was no line on the reel. How does one load line onto a reel? Thanks very much! Tom.

Hi Tom, see also the knots section for tying your line to the spool.

When I bought my new reel I took it to Compleat Angler and bought some line there and they put it on my reel for free, hope this helps.

Tom, you don't mention whether your reel is a sidecast, overhead or spinning reel, but here goes: with any reel that allows direct wind onto the spool such as an Alvey, centrepin blackfishing, fly or overhead (baitcaster or game reel) the line can be simply attached to the spool with a decent firm knot of whatever type and then with the new spool of line "edge on" towards you, wound on. If however your reel is a spinning reel or closed face type overhead reel, this would lead to a twisted line from the start... so: have a look at your reel when you wind it and when winding on your new line, turn the spool of line so that the line comes off the side of the spool in the same direction the line is wound onto your reel, this ensures the line is placed onto your reel without any unnecessary twists. It is also a good idea to wet the line while it's on the spool before loading it onto your reel and to have the line run through a damp rag as it is wound on with some firm pressure applied with your hand.
