Reel seems ceased, how can I fix it?
Marco writes:
Hi, after a recent trip fishing, I realised that my reel does not wind up any more, I can't turn the handle as it is too stiff. When I spin the spool it spins fine, I just can't get it to spin when I turn the handle. I've tried WD40 hoping it would free it up but it didn't work, I was just wondering if anybody had any advice on how I could free this reel up??? Thanks, Marco.

Jon Child replies:
Sounds like your reel is up for or overdue for its first service. If you are not mechanically minded, don't worry. It is just as cost effective (and quicker) to take it down your local tackle store. Once you have it serviced keep it clean. Wash it and your rod after each outing, keep it out of the sand and invest in a reel pouch or bag. Good Fishing to you, Jon Child, Sandringham Angling Club.
Dean replies:
Marco, for future reference, the best way to wash your rods and reels after a trip is to take them into the shower with you. Sounds strange I know, but you'd be surprised how effective it is. Just stand them up in the corner and back the the drag right off, this prevents unnecessary wear on the washers whilst in storage. Have your normal shower then take the rods and reels out, sit the reels on a towel for a day to let them air dry. Then lightly spray with a rust preventive like WD40, taking particular attention to all moving parts and screws. Personally I like to remove the spool before doing this as I don't like spraying the line. Then put them away till the next trip, but remember LEAVE THE DRAG BACKED RIGHT OFF.
