The Wonthaggi Angling Club was formed in 1982 and we have a current membership in excess of 160.
Wonthaggi is situated on the south coast between Inverloch and San Remo. The township was originally based on coal mining. The mines closed in 1968 and it was generally thought that the town would die but in fact the opposite proved to be the case. Wonthaggi is now a thriving township and generally considered to be the capital of South Gippsland.
Since its inception the towns folk had to battle and fishing was seen as a means of survival. There are a few of the old timers left who are members of our club.
We are now looking forward to improving our organization but this would not have been possible had it not been for the efforts of the original members who had the foresight to get the Wonthaggi Angling Club off the ground.
A Family Club
The Wonthaggi Angling Club promotes family participation and the teaching of juniors taking up the sport.
The club encourages the fishing community to look after the environment and not bring the sport into disrespect.
Trips and Competitions
Each year the club conducts a weekend away to the Tambo where on the last weekend of May the Tambo, Mitchell and Nicholson rivers are fished on the Saturday. On the last weekend of October the Tambo river is fished, again on the Saturday
On the third Sunday each month the club conducts a monthly competition with the fish of the month earning double points. The aim of this is to encourage members to fish for the targeted species.
Each year the Turville Shield is organized by the Frankston Boat Owners and Angling Club in conjunction with the Wonthaggi Angling Club. This is a surf fishing competition which attracts anglers from the suburbs and South Gippsland, becoming an established event in the fishing calendar. The weigh-in is conducted at the Wonthaggi Angling Clubrooms located at the local recreation reserve in Korumburra Rd.
Update, 20 May 2008
The club held its monthly competition last Sunday, sponsored by South Gippsland Motors which was very much appreciated. The awful conditions unfortunately saw just four fish greet the weigh master. Alan Bentick won the senior male section with a 405g bream for 2025 points. The senior female section was won by Sue Hamilton with a 285g bream for 1425 points, while Rae Haines had a 225g bream for 1125 points. The veteran section was won by Chris Haines with a 225g bream also for 1125 points. Unfortunately there were no juniors who weighed in fish.
President Graham Gray welcomed everyone along and thanked Elaine Hamilton, Ian Kent and Alan McFayden for the hot weber meal and vegetables. He also thanked everyone who helped make the evening a success, and Henry Williams for his generous donation of sinkers which he does each weigh-in. Graham reminded those present that the subs are now due and payable, and also wished everyone a very successful trip to the Tambo River which is being sponsored by Stockdale and Leggo. Many thanks to Pat Barry for his support over many years.
This weekend the club will be having the first of its bi-annual trips to the Tambo River where members stay at the Tambo River Tourist Caravan Park and are very well looked after by Greg and Aileen Cooper. This is a great trip and over the years there have been very good numbers who have made the effort and enjoyed the fantastic hospitality.
